Freelancer, Agency and DIY Prices

The cost of logo design ranges from nothing for a do-it-yourself tool to more than $10,000 at a top agency. Most small businesses pay somewhere between a few hundred dollars and a couple of thousand. The price tracks how much thinking, how many concepts, and how many files come with the logo, so two quotes that look alike can describe very different work.

The figures below come from published guides, many written by logo and website companies. They disagree on details, so treat them as ranges and ask for quotes against a clear list of what you want.

What do different routes cost?

Route

Typical range in published guides

What it usually means

DIY logo maker

$0 and up

You choose from templates and symbols. Fast and cheap, but others may use similar designs.

Design contest platform

About $299 to $1,299 for one platform

Several designers submit ideas and you pick one.

Freelance designer

About $300 to $800 for a professional result, and up to about $2,500 for the best known

One designer works with you directly.

Agency

Roughly $800 to $2,500 or more at the low end, $2,500 to $10,000 for many agencies, and more at top firms

A team adds research, strategy, several concepts, and a style guide.

Guides give different agency floors. One says $800 to $2,500 or more. Another puts smaller agencies at about $2,500 and top-tier firms at about $10,000. A UK guide gives 2,000 to 15,000 pounds. Most small businesses fall between $300 and $2,000 for a freelancer, per one guide.

Why does the price vary so much?

Experience. Newer freelancers charge less, and well-known designers charge more. One guide puts a logo from someone early in their career at about $500 and the most sought-after freelancers around $2,500.

Research and strategy. A designer who studies your market, your competitors, and your customers before drawing anything spends longer than one who works from a short brief. That work is part of what an agency fee covers.

Number of concepts and revisions. Some quotes include three to five initial concepts and two rounds of revisions. Others include one concept. Ask.

Files and usage rights. A logo needs to work on a website, a business card, a social profile, and perhaps a sign. Guides warn that some quotes leave out extra file formats, and that you may be charged for each additional version. Usage rights should be spelled out too.

Extras. A style guide that records colours, typefaces, and rules for using the logo, plus business cards and stationery, may be included or priced separately.

What should be in a logo package?

Check that your quote lists:

The number of initial concepts and revision rounds

Final files in vector format and web formats

Full-colour, one-colour, and reversed versions for dark backgrounds

A compact version for small spaces such as favicons and app icons

The exact colours and typefaces used, with codes

Brand guidelines, even a short one

Who owns the final artwork

How long the process takes

If a quote leaves out several of these, ask whether they cost extra.

Is a cheap logo a bad idea?

Not always. A new business with a small budget can do fine with a simple, well-made logo from a freelancer. The risk with very cheap offers is that the result is generic, or built from stock elements that other businesses also use. One guide warns that a deal that looks too good to be true may give you a logo that could belong to anyone.

A logo is also only part of a visual identity. If your business will appear on a website, in documents, on social media, and in print, a style guide that sets out colours, type, and layout keeps everything consistent. We explain what goes into that in our post on the brand identity design process.

Which should you choose?

Choose DIY if you need something quickly, the budget is close to zero, and you accept that it may not be unique.

Choose a freelancer if you want a custom logo and have a clear idea of your market. This is the usual route for small businesses.

Choose an agency or studio if you want research and strategy, a full identity system, and a team that can carry the design through to your website and materials.

If you already have a logo with some recognition, a refresh may cost less than starting again. A designer can modernise it, tidy the details, and build a consistent identity around it.

How can you get more from a small budget?

A small budget works best when the brief is clear. Spend an hour before you contact anyone writing down what your business does, who it serves, three words that should describe how it feels, and where the logo will appear. Collect a few logos you like and a few you dislike, with a sentence on why. A designer with a good brief spends less time guessing, and that saves you money.

Limit the scope. A logo and a simple set of colours and fonts is a smaller project than a full identity with stationery and templates. You can add applications later, once the business is earning. Choose a designer whose portfolio shows work you like at your budget level, and ask for references or reviews.

What are the warning signs in a logo quote?

A promise of dozens of concepts for a very low price. Quality work takes time.

No mention of who owns the final artwork.

No vector files, which you need for printing and for resizing without blur.

A logo built from stock symbols or templates that other businesses can also buy.

A refusal to show a process or earlier work.

Unlimited revisions with no stated limit on time, which usually means the project will drift.

Extra charges for formats you will obviously need, such as a version for a dark background.

None of these means the designer is bad. They are prompts to ask a question before you pay.

What about contests and DIY tools?

A design contest asks several designers to submit ideas and lets you choose a winner. It can produce a surprising range of ideas for a fixed fee. The trade-off is that designers working on spec invest less in any single entry, and the result may be less tailored to your business than one made after a conversation with a designer.

A DIY logo maker lets you assemble a logo from templates and symbols in minutes. It suits a side project or a test idea. For a business you intend to grow, check the licence terms, because some tools limit commercial use or charge for the high-resolution files, and remember that other people may be using the same elements.

What should you ask a designer before you start?

How many concepts will I see, and how many rounds of revisions are included?

What files do I receive, and in what formats?

Who owns the logo when the project ends?

Do you provide a short style guide?

How long will the project take, and what do you need from me?

Can I see work that is similar in scope to mine?

What happens if I am not happy with the first direction?

Where does the logo fit in the rest of your brand?

A logo works alongside colours, typefaces, and the way you write and photograph things. If you are also planning a website, brief the designer and the web team together, so the logo works at the sizes a website needs, including a small version for browser tabs. Our guide to how much a website costs covers that side of the budget, and our web design and development services cover building the site around your new identity.

Quick answers

Is a cheap logo worth it?

It can be, for a new business with a small budget, if the logo is simple, original, and delivered in the right files. The risks are generic or recycled artwork, unclear ownership, and missing formats. Check those three things before you pay.

How long does logo design take?

It depends on the process and on how quickly you give feedback. A logo that follows research, several concepts, and refinement takes longer than one chosen from a template. Ask for a schedule, and agree who gives feedback so rounds do not stall.

Do I own my logo after I pay?

You should, but check. A clear contract states that ownership transfers on payment, and lists the files you receive. Some marketplaces and logo makers license the artwork instead of transferring it, which can limit how you use it. Ask before you commit.

How Krylo handles logos and brand identity

We design logos and complete visual identities, and we can build your website in the same project so the brand carries through without a handoff.
