Rankings are usually lost when pages move without redirects, when content that ranked disappears, or when the new site is slower than the old one. Work through the list below in order: audit what exists, plan the new structure and its redirects, build and test, then launch and watch the results.

Before you start: audit the current site

List every page. Export your page list from your content system or a crawl, with titles and addresses.

Find the pages that bring visitors. Use analytics and search reports to see which pages get traffic, enquiries, and links. These are the pages to protect.

Record current performance. Note speed, traffic, conversion rate, and search positions for your main pages, so you can compare after launch.

Collect what works. Note content, headlines, and features that visitors use, and keep them.

Collect what does not. Note pages nobody reads, broken pages, and forms that fail. A UX audit turns this into a ranked list.

List integrations. Forms, email tools, analytics, payment systems, booking tools, and anything else the site connects to.

Check who owns what. Domain, hosting, design files, and accounts.

Plan the new site

Set goals. What should the new site do better: more enquiries, more sales, faster loading, easier updates?

Decide the structure. Which pages stay, merge, split, or go. Fewer, better pages often beat many thin ones.

Map every old address to a new one. This redirect map is the single most useful document in a redesign. Every old address that had traffic or links needs a permanent (301) redirect to its closest new page.

Plan the content. Keep, tighten, or rewrite each page, and decide who writes it.

Choose the platform. Stay on the current one or move. WordPress or custom depends on who will update the site and what it must do.

Set the budget. Include content, photography, tools, and maintenance. Our guide to website redesign cost lists what is often forgotten.

Design and build

Design for phones first. Most visitors arrive on small screens, so design and test there before desktop.

Keep titles and descriptions that work. Carry across page titles, descriptions, and headings for pages that rank, unless you have a reason to change them.

Keep addresses stable where you can. The best redirect is the one you did not need.

Write clear headings and structure. One main heading per page, followed by logical subheadings.

Add descriptive alt text to images, and set image sizes to avoid layout jumps.

Build in accessibility. Colour contrast, keyboard navigation, clear labels on form fields, and visible focus states.

Add structured data for your organisation, services, and articles where it fits.

Connect analytics and tracking so you can see results from day one.

Set up forms and test them end to end, including the email that arrives and the confirmation the visitor sees.

Speed and performance

Google's Core Web Vitals give targets: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint within 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift below 0.1, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits.

Compress and size images properly

Load only the scripts and fonts you need

Use caching and a content delivery network where available

Test on a mid-range phone on a mobile connection, as well as on a fast office laptop

Test before launch

Keep the new site on a staging address that search engines cannot index, and make sure that setting is removed on launch.

Click every link and button. Check for broken links and missing images.

Test the redirect map. Old addresses should land on the right new pages in one step, not through chains.

Test on several browsers and devices, including a phone with a small screen.

Test forms, checkout, and logins.

Check accessibility with a keyboard and a screen reader.

Review security. HTTPS everywhere, up-to-date software, and sensible access settings. For a store or a site with logins, consider an independent penetration test.

Get sign-off from the people who own the content and the goals.

Launch day

Take a full backup of the old site.

Launch at a quiet time, with a developer available.

Switch the site over and confirm HTTPS works.

Activate the redirects and test a sample of old addresses.

Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.

Remove any block that kept the staging site out of search.

Confirm analytics and forms are working.

Tell your team, and update links in your email signatures, social profiles, and directory listings.

After launch: the first weeks

Check Search Console daily at first for crawl errors and pages that dropped out.

Compare traffic, rankings, and conversions with your pre-launch figures. Short dips can happen as search engines reprocess the site, so watch the trend.

Fix broken links and redirect gaps quickly.

Review speed on real visits as well as in lab tests.

Ask staff and a few customers what they notice.

Set up regular website maintenance, so the new site stays fast and safe.

What are the most common redesign mistakes?

The most damaging one is changing addresses without redirects. Every page that moves needs a permanent redirect from its old address, or search engines and visitors reach an error page, and the ranking that page earned is lost.

Close behind is dropping content that ranked. If a page brings in visitors, rewrite it carefully and keep its core. Do not delete it because it does not fit the new design.

Launching with the staging block still on is another. A setting that keeps search engines out of the test site must be removed on launch, and a surprising number of launches forget. Check it first.

Others to watch: a slower site than before, because heavy images and scripts came with the new design; forms that look fine but send no email; missing analytics, which leaves you unable to judge the result; and ignoring phones until the end.

Who should sign off on what?

Redesigns stall when nobody can say yes. Name an owner for each decision. A business owner or manager approves goals, scope, and budget. A content owner approves the words and pictures. A technical contact approves hosting, redirects, and integrations. One person collects feedback and speaks for the business, so the provider gets a single clear answer instead of five opinions.

What should you do with pages you are removing?

If a removed page has a close replacement, redirect it there. If it has no equivalent but still earns visits or links, consider keeping a simplified version. If it truly has no value, it is fine to let it return a not found response, which tells search engines it is gone. Avoid redirecting every old page to the home page, since that confuses visitors and search engines and usually adds nothing.

How long should you monitor after launch?

Watch closely for the first few weeks, and keep checking for a few months. Search engines take time to process a changed site, so small movements in the first days are common. Look at the trend. If traffic or rankings on important pages stay down after the initial settling period, review your redirects, titles, and speed. Fix problems quickly, and keep your results next to the figures you recorded before launch. Our guides to website redesign cost and what a UX audit is cover the budget and the review that come before the build.

Quick answers

How long does a website redesign take?

It depends on how many pages the site has, how much changes, and how fast feedback arrives. A small site takes less time than a large one, and a move to a new platform adds migration and testing. Ask for a written schedule with dates for design, build, content, and launch.

Do I need to tell Google about a redesign?

You do not need to notify anyone, but you should submit your updated sitemap in Google Search Console after launch and watch the reports for errors. The redirects you set up do the main work of carrying your old pages across.

Should I redesign my whole site at once?

Not necessarily. Starting with the pages that bring in the most visitors and enquiries spreads the cost and lowers risk. The rest can follow in stages, as long as the design stays consistent.

How Krylo runs a redesign

Our redesigns start with an audit and a redirect map before any design begins, and the proposal sets out the timeline, the deliverables, and transparent pricing.
